A Earth Quake
A Earth In Venezuela
Venezuela was hit by a catastrophic "doublet" earthquake just days ago on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. This event is the most powerful and destructive seismic activity the country has recorded in over 125 years.
Instead of a standard earthquake followed by minor aftershocks, Venezuela experienced two massive, independent plate-boundary ruptures just 39 seconds apart:
The Foreshock: A magnitude M_w 7.2 quake struck at 6:04 PM local time, centered near San Felipe in Yaracuy state.
The Mainshock: A magnitude M_w 7.5 quake followed almost immediately at 6:05 PM local time, slightly further east near Morón (Carabobo state) at a shallow depth of 10 km.
The Impact & Current Situation
Because June 24th was a national holiday (commemorating the Battle of Carabobo), many families were gathered at home when the shaking started. The shallow depth combined with back-to-back major shocks proved catastrophic for local infrastructure, as buildings already structurally compromised by the first tremor were completely leveled by the second.
Casualties: Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a national state of emergency. Confirmed fatalities quickly climbed past 589 people, with thousands injured and tens of thousands still missing or feared trapped under rubble.
Worst-Hit Areas: The coastal state of La Guaira has been designated a disaster zone. Heavy destruction is also concentrated in the capital city of Caracas, particularly in high-density municipalities like Altamira and Los Palos Grandes where several multi-story residential towers completely collapsed.
Infrastructure Failure: The main airport serving Caracas (Simón Bolívar International) suffered critical structural damage and halted all flights. Power grids, telecommunications, and water services across north-central Venezuela remain heavily disrupted or completely dark as rescue teams from around the world arrive to assist.
